Over cursus

Belgian comics are far more than entertainment; they are a reflection of art, identity, and innovation. What began in the early 20th century as short newspaper strips evolved into a full cultural institution through iconic journals like Spirou and Tintin, which helped professionalize the medium and nurture generations of artists.

Creators such as Hergé, Willy Vandersteen, Franquin, Peyo, Morris, and Jef Nys didn’t just invent memorable characters; they shaped entire artistic styles. From the precision of the ligne claire to the expressive energy of the Marcinelle School, Belgian comics balanced clarity, humor, and movement in ways that influenced artists worldwide.

Technology also played a key role. Printing constraints led to clean lines and bold color palettes that became visual signatures rather than limitations. Today, this legacy lives on not only in museums and murals across Brussels, but also in modern graphic novels, digital formats, and a vibrant collector culture.

Belgian comics show that when art, storytelling, and technical ingenuity align, the result can transcend borders and generations.
